Bus Driver of the Year competition from Jack Cooper

I was visiting Blackpool for the Bus Driver of the Year competition which was taking place on Sunday 14th September. There were 3 drivers representing the Oxford Bus Group, 1 from Thames Travel and 2 from Oxford Bus, both of which drive the Airline service.

Station Road in Reading was closed for the whole day for resurfacing by Martin Dowling

On Monday 29th September Station Road in Reading was closed for the whole day for resurfacing.  I think every route was affected to some extent or other as they all run through here.

For one day only the eastern end of Friar Street, which is always a one way street, was reversed in direction.  Buses which normally start or terminate there, operated from temporary stops in that section of Friar Street or doubled up at other stops along the road.

This meant a lot more buses than usual were there, not helped by cars and vans trying to go their normal way against the flow.  Oxford's X40 opted out entirely by terminating and starting from the station north interchange.

Here are a few photos showing the road works and buses running the wrong way along Friar Street.

Oxford open doors event on October 13th with David Gray

Heritage buses from Oxford Bus Museum | Oxford Preservation Trust

I visited Oxford for the Oxford open doors event yesterday and as usual Oxford Bus Museum supplied some of their vehicles for a drive around the City Centre. All the buses were at or near full capacity and the passengers, many tourists, enjoyed the experience.

The route taken originated from New Road and proceeded via Queen Street (where 756 KFC was on display), High Street over Magdalen bridge, The Plain roundabout, back over Magdalen bridge, Longwall Street, St Cross Road, South Parks Road, Parks Road, Banbury Road, Banbury Road, George Street and Worcester Street.

I managed  to get some photos from a few different locations

Grahame Wareham remembers COMS 365

L365  NWL713 1949 AEC Regent III with NCB L30/26R lowbridge body. L365 was renumbered L139 in the new divided series in 1952.  L139 spent its life at most of the country depots to the west of the City and was withdrawn in January 1963. It was subsequently sold to Transport (Passenger Equipment) Ltd.,Macclesfield  (dealer) in March 1963. It was later sold on to Bedlington & District, Ashington in November 1963 lasting there until November 1967 when it passed to W.North (dealer), Sherburn in Elmet who later sold it on to B. Johnson (dealer) of South Elmsall for scrap the same month.

365  DFC365D 1966 AEC Renown 3B3RA with Park Royal H38/27F forward entrance low-height body. 365 spent its early life as a Oxford Cowley Road based bus used on City routes, mainly 1 & 2 roads. It was not selected for OMO conversion so upon recertification due date was withdrawn as surplus.. It was sold to Transport Passenger Equipment Co. (dealer), Macclesfield in October 1973 and sold on to Stevensons, Spath, Uttoxeter where it lasted until June 1979 when it was sold to T.Wigley (Dealer), Carlton, Barnsley for scrap.

365  V15OXF  2013 Volvo B5LH with Wright Eclipse Gemini 2 low-height H45/27F body. It featured  Volvo parallel hybrid technology using battery power when available to move the bus up until the first gear change into second gear where the engine automatically starts and the bus proceeds as a normal diesel bus. 365 was originally delivered in red City livery and operated mostly on service 2. In 2018 it received a colourbus In 2022 the route 2 buses were rebranded as route 3's and 365 plied this route until February 2024 when it was despatched to Stagecoach Manchester to run the franchised services on behalf of Transport for Greater Manchester becoming 13189 in that fleet, It was reregistered OE62ZRY prior to departure and has since been repainted in the TFGM canary yellow.

Ah ! What memories. Ed.

Midlands Interlude from Keith Briant

I said in the last issue that I would focus on Arriva's X6 Leicester to Coventry service this week, but I've held back due to having managed to obtain a few unplanned shots over the last couple of weeks which should make an interesting up to date selection.

Over the summer, there has been a great deal of rail replacement work on both the West Coast Main Line and Cross Country Trains and vehicles used are often stabled in Nuneaton bus station. Last Sunday night at 9.15pm it was a pleasant surprise to find these in an otherwise deserted bus station.

Bus Link 64 (B24 LNK) and 63 (B22 LNK) are former Reading Buses Scania OmniDekkas (YT59 OZO/N) still carrying Reading livery. Another of the same type is YT09 YHO formerly with Nottingham City Transport. This had more recently been ith Ridley's of Leamington, but I haven't been able to trace who owns it now and the Ridley's vinyls have been removed.

Diamond Bus livery makes a welcome change in the area. On that same night their 40850 (YY74 RRO) was seen. This is one of just 2 Enviro400 MMCs in the fleet. Earlier in the day Wright StreetDeck 40833 (MF21 AVF) was captured. I'll feature other vehicles used on rail replacement on a future occasion.

Arriva Midlands North 3757 (MX59 FGF) a VDL SB200/Wright Pulsar 2 still in Sapphire livery is seen on Nuneaton's Callendar Farm estate on the newly extended service 65 from Tamworth to Nuneaton. This was transferred from Merseyside last year.  Whilst I was waiting for this bus, a woman who was walking her dog challenged me about what I was doing. When I explained, she still seemed uncertain, but then launched into a massive complaint about the size of the buses on the estate roads!

Arriva Midlands 2316 (LM64 JOJ) a Wright StreetLite WF is seen on sister service 64 heading from Callendar Farm into Nuneaton. Here it is waiting time in leafy surroundings in St Nicolas Park outside of my GP practice. St Nicolas Park is so called because it is named after the parish church of Nuneaton and in days gone these were fields owned by the church which provided a very lucrative income. It made the St Nicolas parish one of the most prosperous in Warwickshire and was a popular location for the clergy as a result!

Two Optare Solos have recently been transferred from Arriva North East - 2531/2 (YJ11 OJB/OHY) and have taken fleetnumbers previously used by buses of the same type. They join other Solos in the same registration series that were new to the Midlands fleet. Both are allocated to Hinckley. The former carries a very patchwork looking Arriva base livery and the latter retains the 'Frequenta' scheme making it unique in the fleet. I literally realised the former was on my local service whilst I was typing this, so rushed out for the first of these photos. These Solos are of the rarer M880SL type and it's been a few years since similar models were used in this area. The previous occasion is illustrated by now withdrawn 2433 (YT09 OTZ), a slightly longer M950SL model.

Leicester Thurmaston based driver trainer T70 (LJ59 ADX) is seen at rest in Nuneaton bus station. It carried former Routemaster registration 70 CLT for a time whilst in London service. I regularly see a car in Nuneaton carrying former Routemaster registration VLT 84 from one of those lengthened by Lothian buses, but haven't managed to get a photo of it yet to accompany my photo of the actual RM taken on the Edinburgh tour many years ago.

The Mercedes-Benz Citaros must be on borrowed time at Arriva Midlands now with only 3000-6, 3914/20 remaining at Tamworth. Here a third of them are seen. Midland Red liveried 3006 (BJ12 YPP) and standard liveried 3004 (BJ12 YPN) are seen in Nuneaton bus station and 3001 (BJ12 YPK) is seen eastbound on the A5 Watling Street.

Next is a trio of Yutong E12s that need no further introduction now! 73124 (YK25 OPK) is seen displaying Stagecoach's new strapline in its destination display, 73041 (YK74 PKY) has just joined the A5 heading towards Hinckley and 73040 (YK74 PKX) is seen surrounded by car parking signs in Nuneaton town centre. Please excuse the badly framed shot of 73041, I literally pulled onto someone's dropped kerb when I saw the bus stopped behind me at the traffic lights. I've previously mentioned one of the claims to fame the A5 has between Nuneaton and Hinckley as it is allegedly haunted by the ghost of Dick Turpin. Here is it's other claim to fame. The Longshoot pub and hotel behind the bus has a holiday camp style chalet block behind it. This was featured in the opening credits of the earlier series of the old ITV soap opera Crossroads which ran from 1964 to 1988 before a brief revival in the early 2000s.

Finally, Kovacs Group, a Nuneaton based temporary labour provider has recently taken delivery of KG02 BUS, an Enviro400 with H51/35F bodywork. It is seen here alongside their other bus, KG03 BUS a Volvo B8L with MCV EvoSeti H60/38F bodywork new last year. These buses are kept in a yard adjacent to the M69 at junction 2 and are visible from the southbound slip. I parked outside and discovered there were locked electronic gates, but as I walked away someone kindly opened them remotely for me to take this photo. The Enviro had a launch filmed at the Alexander Dennis factory which has been uploaded to Kovac's YouTube channel with director Robert Kovac and was also featured in Route One recently.

Local fleets update by David Bird

Former Carousel Optare Versas 80431 / 80432 YJ65 EVM / EVN are now at Arriva Midlands North Shrewsbury depot.

They entered service in early September on Interurban Services X5,
63 and 64 and have been repainted in standard Arriva Journey Mark livery with fleet numbers 2988 / 2989

Carousel have another former Reading Buses StreetLite RE63 EOJ with fleet number 80445 it has been repainted in plain red
and has no branding but interestingly still has a Courtney Buses silver bird logo above the drivers window.
Since arriving in mid September it has spent a lot of time on Service 34 Lane End to High Wycombe

along with 80444 RE63 EOH the other former Reading StreetLite.

Just branded on September 30th.

Aylesbury to Amersham Rail Replacement with Derek Taylor

Some of the vehicles allocated on the Aylesbury to Amersham RR on the weekend of 20/21 September. I think the Global vehicle was the first time they have been used. A second e mail follows to complete the set.

NewPower’s Launton Road factory in Bicester by Newman Morgan

I enclose a photo taken yesterday afternoon (Saturday) at NewPower’s Launton Road factory in Bicester. I prefer to take photos at this site at a further distance otherwise photos are dominated by the steel fencing.  The red bus is a new Electroliner destined for Go-Ahead Plymouth according to Buses on the Web. It was identified solely by the registration number BN75NVX chalked on the rear registration plate area.

The other six buses are First Bus conversions from diesel to electric. As is customary for these  conversions each bus is re-registered and given a new fleet number in the 71xxx series. It’s usually the case that the finished product is returned to a different First subsidiary to the one it was previously with. A significant number have come from First West of England’s Bristol Hengrove and Weston-super-Mare depots which have been converted to electric buses following receipt of over 74 Yutong double deckers.

The six First vehicles in the photo have yet to receive their new fleet numbers or fleet names and from left to right are now registered CSU932, WLT770, DMZ5714, MIG9615, HVJ716 and MIG8433. Registration numbers CSU932 and WLT770 have a long association with First Glasgow both having been used on previous buses. HVJ716 has previously been used on an Alexander Royale bodied Olympian and an earlier coach both of which were in First South West’s Cornwall fleet (First Kernow).

The second photo was taken this morning (Sunday) at NewPower’s Empire Road factory in Bicester. The two vehicles on the right are First West of England Streetdeck Ultroliners from Weston-super-Mare depot,  35148 and 35157, the latter one being only partially visible. On the left side of the photo are two more from First West of England in Badgerline livery. These were devoid of fleet numbers and I could not read their registration numbers. These two would be from either Bristol Hengrove depot or Weston-super-Mare.

Behind these in the parking area was a 3rd one in Badgerline and 4 or 5 more similar buses from First  waiting workshop attention. There was one in a blue livery which may not be from First. The Diamond Bus livery is predominantly blue and a few months ago their StreetDeck 40725 was converted to Electric at NewPower and placed in service at the company’s Tividale depot in the West Midlands. The company wanted to trial it before having any more converted. My thought was that perhaps the blue liveried bus at Empire Way had come from this operator following a successful trial.

Buses fro so far away in our patch. Ed.

Bedfordshire Steam fair 12/9/25 at Shuttleworth with Gary Seamarks

A few taken at Bedfordshire Steam fair 12/9/25 at Shuttleworth, sadly no planes were outside on the day.

These were all the buses and coaches that were in the event, some more detailed than others, from info off PSVC preserved buses and DVLA website, along with own records.

Its also worth noting that many vehicles arrive on the back of low-loaders or in some cases flatbeds. Captions on attachment.

The event is massive and over 960 items were entered from full fairground rides down to 1 stroke stationary engines. after 7 hours still hadn't covered all the exhibits.

Alexander asks about the 1B

It was nice to see that Richard Sharman referred to the recently introduced 800 service as the modern version of the old 1B, I do indeed remember that! The 1B ran between Gloucester Green and Horspath Rd, just like the 800 does although it followed part of the same route as the 1 unlike the 800 which runs via Redbridge before it ceased operation back in 2002/2003 when Stagecoach started using vans to cover crew changes. There certainly have been alot of old bus routes re-introduced over the past few years, do you know why that's

Why is that so few busses use GG these days? It seems A waste of A bus station in my opinion, especially since they'd problems with lack of space in the past when now they've got plenty of space but hardly any busses.

David Newman on X34 but not as we know it - Hello Malcolm, have just seen the above article which bought back a few memories.

I drove this for Alder Valley, 40 years ago.I well remember 1189 being the most regular on this route. NOT my favourite coach as it had a droning noise and vibration which was tiring as you had the coach on the am shift from 7am to 3pm.

To make matters worse a new garage manager cut the fuel pump down which made it quite slow.A funny story was another regular driver Smudger Smith decided to tinker with the fuel pump in Southampton bus station during our break there, un fortunately he dropped a piece of the pump down a drain which resulted in 1189 being stranded down there for 3 days.

Other coaches we used were 1191 and my favourite 1127, a Leopard with ECW coachwork if i remember correctly, this coach really flew.

Occasionally 245 was used a National with coach seats.

I tended to move around between various bus/coach companies and later on 1990 worked for Bennetts of Chieveley and drove the B34 service Newbury to West Ilsley mainly using Bedford coaches with a walking stick to hook on the door handle.

Long days 12 hours, not such good pay, three pound an hour if i remember correctly, but Dick Bennett best boss i ever worked for and in 52 years i have worked for quite a few.

Anyway thats enough rubbish from me, thanks for the newsletter and all the best.

Neil Gow has a question PPH of Iver ?

I’m wondering if any of your readers have recently seen any vehicles belonging to PPH of Iver (not the same as the one in St Albans). They used to have a school contract to one of the Marlow Hill schools.

Reading

Reading Buses were shocked to hear that they had achieved an historic ‘threepeat’ at the Chartered Institute for Logistics and Transport (CILT) Awards last night, Thursday 25 September. The bus company retaining their Passenger Transport Award for a second time and completing the so-called ‘threepeat’ – winning the same award three times in a row.

The awards were held at the world-famous Silverstone racetrack, the scene of many famous triumphs which now includes Reading Buses’ win.

The company were up against stiff competition once more – with the Rail Delivery Group and the The Intalink Enhanced Partnership, Hertfordshire County Council also shortlisted. However, once again, the local, municipal bus company came out on top.

The judges felt there was a great deal of good practice that deserves to be replicated elsewhere. It was an industry leading example of local stakeholder engagement in terms of marketing, community initiatives, service provision and innovation launch events.

Said Robert Williams, Reading Buses’ Chief Executive Officer; “We are honoured, as well as shocked, to win for a third time in a row and complete the threepeat. This is something we didn’t expect, but it proves that what we are doing matters not only to our customers, but also to the industry.”

“Our motto is that we want to connect people and places with an amazing team - and we certainly do that. We have the best people giving the best service – both on the road and behind the scenes. We really couldn’t deliver for our customers without our amazing team.”

Martin Dowling

Several Enviro 400s from Newbury are now back in Reading.  They were formerly used on school contracts which RB no longer operates.

790 to 794 inclusive are already here and it is thought that 789 will be joining them soon.  They are still in Newbury colours and being used as generic buses, but are often on route 20 which is a term-time limited stop service to and from the university.  This photo  taken on Thursday 25th shows 791 at the station.

It is thought that three of them will be repainted for this route in due course.

The electric bus saga goes on.  1 and 2 are out driver training and being charged with a temporary set up.  Apparently the chargers are all in place, but waiting for the electricity board to provide a suitable connection.  Meanwhile the bulk of the buses are still waiting in Scotland ..

Since 7th July Red Rose have been providing a service (K1) from Aylesbury town centre to the new Kingsbrook development. Hitherto this had been a corridor that Z & S had exclusively served with their K1. Red Rose times are 5 minutes before Z & S.

From 15th September Z & S have been providing a service (SR1) from Aylesbury town centre to the Fairford Leys area - there is a 4 hour gap in service between 0955 and 1355. Hitherto this had been a corridor that Red Rose had exclusively served with their SR1. Z & S times are 5 minutes before Red Rose.

Could this be the beginning of some competition in and around Aylesbury?

Mark Turner

Here are details of the Stagecoach West Fleet Card for Period 5 dated 12/09/2025. There are a lot of changes to record this time. This follows on from service changes throughout the Company’s area on 31/08/2025. The changes affecting Oxfordshire depots are shown in yellow. Hopefully we have recorded them all correctly!

No, the 94 doesn't run to Oxford but 10753 was helpig out in Oxford on  September 8th.

Richard Sharman

Tuesday the 16th of September 2025 saw Stagecoach East debut the new 'Steel Blue' livery on the first vehicle in the fleet to gain it, ADL Enviro400MMC 10877, YX67 VDO. It is seen on its first day in service, and it's very first trip into Oxford on the X5. Although it then seemingly left towards Horspath Road depot to have an issue sorted and then appeared in service later in the evening.

Taken on September 16th.

Arriva's LT738 is one of several to carry this purple based advert, captured here heading away from Sloane Square on 14 September.

Metroline's LT791 is seen at Archway on the same day picking up at the start of route 390 to Victoria.  It advertises Ecover dishwasher detergent.

The latest addition to the Superloop network started on 27 September with the launch of BL1 linking Waterloo with Lewisham.  Intended as an interim until the Bakerloo line is extended from Elephant and Castle to Lewisham, the route is branded 'Bakerloop' and uses the familiar brown of the Bakerloo line.  Operated by Go Ahead London from Waterloo garage, the route uses a batch of 5 year old 'Ee' class electrics which started life working from Northumberland Park garage in north east London.

Ee38 is a typical example seen rounding St George's Circus on the route's inaugral day.

With a comfortable new living room courtesy of Wayfair some may decide to settle down to enjoy the latest series of The Great British Bakeoff.  On 14 September Go Ahead's LT507 at Whitehall and Transport UK's LT984 at Hammersmith illustrate both sides of the campaign

This Top View Enviro 400 carries an advert featuring the Union Standard advertising Anduril, an American defense technology company that specializes in advanced autonomous systems.

Quite how many of the tourists crossing London Bridge on 20 September will want to buy the company's products is debatable.

Barbour is another US company which has found favour in the UK.  Stagecoach's LT389 advertises the brand in New Oxford Street on 20 September.

After starring at the Catford garage open day Stagecoach's 11011 has re-entered service resplendent in its Selkent Envoy livery.
On 20 September it approaches Lewisham whilst working on route 136.

Skincare cream Medic8 is advertised on First London's BCE47011in Regent Street on 27 September.

Have just been to Wales, where the weather was perhaps predictably wet for most of the time I was there!

While my holiday involved very little Bus usage, while in Porthmadog managed to get a photo of one of the new Yutong Electrics used there on one of the Traws Cymru services.

The vehicles appear to be charged in a compound adjacent to Transport for Wales Railway Station.

This bus was spotted at West Bromwich on route 3 to Merry Hill.

It is 875 Toni Lynn in a former Coventry livery. Apologise for the reflections. Unavoidable in a bus station!!
