Oxfordshire operator Pearces Coaches joins Go Ahead

The Go-Ahead Group has continued its expansion in the coach field with the acquisition of Oxfordshire operator Pearces Coaches. It will become part of the growing Oxford Bus Group subsidiary led by Managing Director Luke Marion.

Purchase of Pearces follows the acquisition and integration into Oxford Bus Group by Go-Ahead of Pulhams Coaches of Bourton-on-the-Water 2023 and during 2024 Swanbrook of Cheltenham in 2024, along with several other coach operator buys by the group elsewhere in England.

Speaking about the decision to sell, Pearces Coaches Managing Director Martin Pearce says: “We are delighted to join Go-Ahead, which shares our approach in offering high-quality, reliable and punctual services to the local community.

“As a leading public transport business with such a strong local presence, we know our loyal customers will continue to experience excellent service when we become part of Go-Ahead.”

The buyer’s Group Chief Executive Miguel Parras adds: “Pearces Coaches is a fantastic operator with an excellent reputation, and we are delighted to welcome it to Go-Ahead.

“Our Oxford Bus [Group] has gone from strength to strength, connecting customers from a wider area with a wider range of services. We have grown our coach and bus services significantly in the last few years to provide additional high-quality services for schools, local businesses, and local authorities.”

Pearces was established in 1970 and has an O-Licence authorising 14 vehicles from two operating centres in Wallingford. Among its clients are the University of Oxford and local private schools.

The first event of our 2025 Classic Bus Running programme is fast approaching and will be based at Rickmansworth, taking place on Sunday 30th March. This date is fifty-three years to the day since the last GS buses saw service under the jurisdiction of London Country Bus Services on route 336A between Rickmansworth and Loudwater Village and thanks to the assistance and co-operation from Loudwater Estates, once again, GSs will be running through the private estate complex. We have a number of GS owners who have agreed to participate with their buses on the day and it is planned that each departure to Loudwater will be duplicated subject to vehicle availability. Programmes for the event will shortly be going to print and will be available to order through our website very soon. Look out for further updates as the event draws closer

The Algarve by Andrew Webb

Stretching along the south coast of Portugal, the Algarve has a range of towns and cities popular with tourists all year.

Faro is the region's capital and largest city.  The concession for local services is operated by Barraqueiro using the Proximo brand.  A visit on 19 February found a range of vehicles in use.

Several electric buses operate in the city including these Novus City V7s built by Lithuanian manufacturer Atlas.

P121 is seen near the main bus station heading off on 'local route 'Circuitio 1'

Heading in the opposite direction is P422, a larger model seemingly from the same manufacturer.

The local Circuitio  routes are also operated with Mercedes Sprinters fitted with Atomic Mini bodies from Portuguese manufacturer Irmãos Mota.  P118 is a typical example.

Irmãos Mota bodywork can also be found on two generations of MAN chassis working in the city.  P403 illustrates the older version.

The newer version of MAN is typified by P418.

Barraqueiro also operate under the 'Via Faro' brand using Citaros and Mercedes Sprinters

Interurban services and local services in other towns are run by Eva Transportes using the 'Vamus' brand.  German manufactured vehicles feature heavily in the fleet.

Taveria, a pleasant city halfway between Faro and the Spanish border, has a compact bus station for services.

Seen in the same location on 18 February is this Mercedes Conecto, seemingly the only example of the type in the area.

More common is the Mercedes Intouro which forms the backbone of the fleet.  7413 is a typical example, seen in Faro on 19 February whilst headed for Olhão.

Another workhorse is the MAN Lion's Regio, including 7574 which is seen in Pedras d’el Rei on 22 February.

It is operating the infrequent weekday route 105 to Taveira, although the defective blind is unable to display the full route number.  From Pedras d’el Rei a 600mm gauge railway runs out to the beach on a neighboring island

Olhão is another town served by Eva Transportes.  Local services are operated by Irmãos Mota bodied Sprinters using the Cubo brand.

9329 is seen arriving in the central area on 21 February.

Olhão's council also have a fleet of coaches including these two Volvo B8R chassis carrying Irmãos Mota bodies

The relative slowness of Portuguese railways means that a network of competing express coaches has sprung up. As in the UK contractors use vehicles in the appropriate livery.

Eva Transportes is one contractor, favoring Mercedes Tourismos.

9876 is seen in Olhão on 21 February, whilst 9881 takes fuel in Vila Real de Santo Antonio on 17 February.

The company also uses vehicles in Mundial Turismo livery,
as these two examples laying over in the bus station at Vila Real de Santo Antonio on 17 February illustrate

Vila Real de Santo Antonio is also on the Flixbus network.  As in the UK, daily operation is in partnership with local operators.

This Irizar is operated by Simply Travel.

Another operator with British links is Alsa, the Spanish subsidiary of the UK company Mobico which is the parent company of National Express.  This Spanish registered  Irizar, seen passing through Faro on 19 February is operating the cross border service from Lagos to Seville.  The blue livery is reminiscent of the colour scheme used by Travel Coventry.

Cruz Vermelha Portugesa (Portuguese Red Cross) operate this Iveco with Marcopolo Junior bodywork.  It is seen in Olhão on 21 February.

Buses and coaches are versatile vehicles, capable of many different configurations.

This unidentified double decker in Faro on 19 February is used as a mobile theatre

Further versatility of coaches was on show in Taveira on 21 February when the town hosted the finish line for stage 3 of the  Volta a Portugal cycle race.   After cycling over 180km in around 4 hours the riders are quickly onto team coaches to warm down and head for the next day's starting point.

The Ineos Grenadiers team can trace their roots back to Team Sky who enjoyed success between 2010 and 2019.  Managed by Sir Dave Brailsford, the riders are looked after in this Italian registered Volvo 9900 which has been customised for its role.

Cycling is very popular in The Netherlands so it is fitting that this Dutch registered MAN Lion's coach is used by Team Visma.

The MAN Lion's coach is also used by UAE Team Emirates XRG and Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe.

Confidis also use the MAN Lion's Coach, fitting a washing machine in the lockers.
Fenix also have mobile laundry facilities in their Van Hool team coach

The Mercedes Tourismo is another popular choice with the cycling teams.  Tudor use an Italian registered tri example, whilst Lidl-Trek have a four wheel model.

I then caught the train back to Victoria as I knew there was a lot of wraps in that area and Marble Arch. The main problem for me was that the sun came out very brightly and with tall buildings and reflections it made it very difficult to get good pictures and as I think Andrew Webb mentioned a couple of weeks ago there seems to be a trend to use black backgrounds for wraps and this does not help matters either.Emirates

At Victoria was Arriva LT 320 on Rte 38, Go-Ahead LT 58 on Rte 11, RATP LT 81 on Rte 148 and finally Arriva LT 513 on Rte 137 at Marble Arch.

Arriva cuts in Hemel area and X5 cut to hourly on Saturdays from April 2025 but Red Eagle starting a 500 between Hemel and Watford from 14th April.

I have now had a look at the changes taking effect from 6 April when Carousel take over a number of services in the Maidenhead and Windsor areas. I understand all are being worked from the High Wycombe depot
At least Carousel are being proactive - the total opposite of what Arriva were in this area
The link from High Wycombe
to Windsor via Maidenhead is being restored on an hourly headway daily - as 37 Mon to Sat and 37B on Sundays. The 10 and 10a new routes between Windsor and Staines Mon to Sat are worked off the 37 and provide the quickest route between these two towns via Datchet and Wraysbury/Horton and replaces the withdrawn P1 and 305.
The 15 works from Slough hourly Mon to Sat to Taplow Sainsbury's via Eton, Eton Wick and Dorney providing useful connections. Then local Maidenhead services are operated 3 daily, 3a Mon to Fri out to White Waltham, 4 daily, 7a Mon to Sat, 9 daily and 52 Mon to Fri.
Thames Valley buses will still operate a number of routes and take over White Bus 01 as 1 through Windsor Great Park and incorporate the former W1 in the route. The P1 will be replaced by the 10/10a.
Interestingly Thames Valley route 2 from Windsor will provide a quick link from Dedworth to Slough and onto Wexham Park Hospital via Farnham Road and Manor Park.
Does this signal a reduction soon in Red Line's WP1 as Carousel have already introduced a daily service to the hospital from Slough.
With this expansion by Carousel there is again an increase in its PVR and it now appears to be 85 Mon to Fri schooldays, 80 non schooldays , 61 Saturdays and 36 on Sundays. This does not include unscheduled extras or Pick Me Up. It is not so long ago that the Sunday PVR was single figures.
At the moment roadworks are causing havoc to schedules and routes 32, 32a and 34 are on diversion as the exit onto London Road from Micklefield Road is closed. Traffic in Guinions Road ( the diversion route parallel to London Road) was gridlocked during the morning peak today as it was yesterday during the afternoon/late ⁶an event has a knock on effect on other routes and I do not envy the staff trying to control the ensuing mayhem.
We now have to see what changes are in store for the Chesham area. Interesting times!

Mark Turner

Importantly Hertfordshire County Council Intalink website for April changes, shows Red Eagle is to launch a 500 service Aylesbury - Hemel Hempstead on a 90 min frequency with extra journeys at peak times.

More ominously Arriva X5 is reduced to hourly on Saturdays!

Given past Arriva actions this does not bode well for the future?

Thames Valley Buses have today announced that the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead will have a new bus network from Sunday 6 April.

The move follows retendering of the most lightly used services in the area by the Council, and Thames Valley buses have taken the opportunity to introduce a raft of improvements to the most popular services in the area that they run without public funding.

The company say that the changes encompass some new services, as well as some improvements to timetables, the creation of new links between areas that currently have no direct service, and the introduction of brand-new buses.

Simon Fisher, General Manager of Thames Valley Buses outlined the changes; “We are delighted to have been awarded the contract to operate historic route 1 between Ascot & Windsor, via Sunninghill, Sunningdale, Cheapside and Windsor Great Park – a service with one of the more quirky routes through Windsor Great Park.  We have simplified the route within the Great Park to start the service, but during the summer, we will be serving Savill Garden Visitor Centre on Saturdays and Bank Holidays as a route 1A variant.  On weekdays, route 1 will be extended to Dedworth via St Andrews Crescent and Wolf Lane, replacing service W1 which is being discontinued.”

Continued Simon; “Our Route 2 will be changed give Dedworth residents a much faster service direct to Slough, reducing the journey time to around 15 minutes from the current 35-40 minutes. Most journeys will also extend to Wexham Park Hospital via Farnham Road, providing new direct links to the hospital from Windsor, Dedworth & Farnham Road”.

“Our route 7 from Woodlands Park to Maidenhead town centre will see an improved timetable.  Buses will run later in the evening until 10.20pm, and 7.20pm on Sundays. One bus per hour will now extend to St Marks Hospital via Boyn Hill. The other bus per hour will now connect seamlessly with route 16 to provide easy connections to Windsor.”

Simon also outlined a new more direct route for the 16; “Route 16 will run hourly between Maidenhead, Dedworth and Windsor, reducing the end-to-end journey time to as little as 28 minutes.

Routes 2 and 16 will combine to provide a half hour frequency between Dedworth and Windsor via Dedworth Road, significantly improving the offering for customers in this area.

New route 227 will replace route 234/5 to Waltham St Lawrence and will be extended to Twyford Station for commuters and leisure travellers alike.

New route 228 will replace routes 238/239 to Hurley and provide a consistent service from Maidenhead to Henley six days a week with most journeys calling at Stubbings Garden Centre.

Following a review, we are introducing a new timetable for route 53 to improve punctuality.  The Saturday service through to Wexham Park Hospital will be doubled in frequency to hourly.”

Simon explained that there are brand new buses on order for most of these routes, which will feature a striking new design for buses in Windsor & Maidenhead.

“We have ordered a suite of new high specification buses for the network and we expect them to be here in the summer. An updated colour scheme, bespoke for Windsor & Maidenhead, will make our buses look amazing, with the aim of attracting residents and tourists alike. They will also have significant on-board improvements taking the services to the next level – as customers on our most recent buses on Bracknell routes 171/172, can attest.”

“We regret that we will no longer be operating town routes 3, 8 or 9 in Maidenhead, or a service to Fifield, which will be provided by another operator.”

Thames Valley Buses say that full information on all of the changes can be found at www.thamesvalleybuses.com including updated timetables.

Thames Valley Buses is a renowned local bus operator, owned by Reading Buses – the company is the name for local bus travel in Wokingham, Bracknell, Slough, Windsor and Maidenhead.
