Apologies for the delay in posting but domestic problems intervened.

A very cold week which provided some excellent pictures of buses in the snow. There are times when as a retired person, one looks out of the window and is thankful that there is no need to venture out.

High Wycombe is predominately red these days as this picture from Gavin Francis shows.

H325 LWL320 was the final of the batch of1946 AEC Regent II's with Park Royal H30/26R semi-utility bodies. H325 was renumbered to H859 in 1952 in a scheme to keep the high-bridge buses in a separate series.to help prevent bridge incidents with Oxford and Cowley station bridges. H859 was withdrawn in April 1958 and sold to Deacon (dealer) Dorchester passing to Warner, Tewksbury in September 1958 and fitted with platform doors becoming H30/26RD. It lasted with Warners until May1967 when it was withdrawn from service and scrapped in September 1967.

325 325NJO 1962 AEC Bridgemaster 2B3RA with Park Royal H40/25F forward entrance bodywork. 325 was allocated to Cowley Road garage as a Country route bus from new performing mainly on the 93 route to Kidlington. It carried an offside illuminated advert for Morrell's Ales for its entire life and with the amalgamation of City and Country routes in 1968 became a 2 road bus up and until withdrawal in September 1971 because of a fractured rear subframe. It was later sold to Premier Travel in March 1973 as a source of spares for the Bridgemaster's they had recently purchased, the remains being scrapped by Smith, Thriplow.

There we are for 325's history and the end of the utility Regent II's.

I would also mention that I had occasion to visit Didcot by bus and spent a bit of time at the depot and Parkway station. Thames Travel seems a very well oiled operation with buses and drivers arriving changing routes, buses and with a very tight turn around time. Whilst I wasn't worried about times I noted that the staff seemed very committed and the overall impression left me with the feeling of a very slick operation. Also with the transfer of many of Oxford's diesel Streetdeck's to Thames  a very colourful experience!

I have attached a few images......it had been raining in the morning hence the muddy appearance on otherwise smart buses!

Many thanks to Grahame for this week's old and new. Ed.

A visit to Binders Yard with Gavin Francis

Every few weeks I drop into Binders Yard in High Wycombe which is the home of a number of coach operators. There always seems to be something different to see.

Cliffs Coaches now own 2 Scania/East Lancs Omnidekka. They started life as Nottingham 733 (YN04UJU) and 673 (YN05WGD) before moving to Xelabus who reregistered them J15XEL AND L7XEL respectively. They have now returned to their original registrations and are pictured together and also 673 in Nottingham in 2015.

Harlequin Coaches have now completed the branding of BK14LFG. It was originally with Bournemouth on National Express work before switching to operating for Megabus. It is shown in July 2017 on NatEx route 035 and in January 2002 on the Megabus Poole and Bournemouth service.

Harlequin also have a small fleet of Optare Olympus buses acquired from UNO. 207 is shown at Showbus Duxford in 2011. It was later converted to become a UNO trainer and repainted blue.

The Caetano Levante has become a popular coach with Binders Yard operators and the latest to arrive is BV67JZR but this is the first tri-axle. It is shown in the yard of Angel Coaches. Previously it was owned by Whippets who like Bournemouth used the coach on NatEx work but they switched to Flixbus where the coach is seen at Marble Arch in June 2023.

Angel Coaches regularly update their fleet and their latest arrival is Yutong GT24AET.
This model is becoming very popular with many coach operators throughout the country.

The biggest operator of Levantes in the yard is Ashwood Travel who I believe have 4 of them. Originally FN62CGE Ashwood have reregistered all the Levantes this one becoming AT60AWT. The coach is seen operating on NatEx service A3 in May 2013.

So much of interest so close to home !  Ed.

Camden Running Day with comment by Gavin Francis

On Sunday 17th November another of the popular bus running days was held this time based around the Camden area.

Buses ran on routes 24, 29, 134 and 214 using mainly RT and RM family buses.

Nigel Eadon-Clarke was there to record the buses seen.

ie Trams enter service by Gavin Francis

This week after an extensive period of delays the Irizar ie trams finally entered service on Route 358 running between Crystal Palace and Orpington. It was due to start in March 2023, then June 2024. This makes it London’s longest electric bus route and immediately gives a problem in that a full charge will not last all day.

It was decided that a way around this would be to opportunity charge at each end of the route to keep the batteries topped up. A 6min charge will give at least another 55kms of running.

Over the last 20 years the route has seen a variety of buses used on it including Scania OmniCity 523  at Crystal Palace on 4th July 2006, Citaro MEC 52 at Bromley South on 15th July 2016, and Streetdeck WS 126 on 6th July 2023 and E200 Metrobus 756 also on 6th July 2023 both at Crystal Palace.

On arrival at Crystal Palace the buses stop underneath the pantograph which lowers and rests gently on the roof.

Ie11 receives its charge and in front of MEC 62 are the locating points for the front nearside wheels
to make sure the bus is in the correct position underneath the pantograph.

To the right of ie10 a large cabinet contains the power supply for the pantograph.

At the moment only about the half the allocation of buses on the route are these new buses, normal diesel buses making up the balance however it is hoped in the next few weeks to achieve a full run out.

MEC 69 and WS 124 both on the 354 on Saturday.

The nearside is shown by ie11 and the rear by ie6.

Once this is achieved there could be the problem of two buses arriving at the same time as there is only one pantograph and one of them has to wait although I would have thought it should not be a problem missing out a charge at one end.

If this is a success then maybe this will be used for other outer London routes where suitable space is available at the terminus.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWf8LkRtgX0

Geoff Marshall who regularly produces some great videos on both London Buses and Trains has already posted a video on You Tube of the new buses and this gives lots of details of the new service.

Out of interest he has also posted a new video covering the Bourne End to Marlow Railway Line for train enthusiasts.

Martin Dowling

I noted with interest Derek's photos of buses in Reading and Bracknell.  Derek suggested that getting an X4 was a much better bet than route 4.  Unfortunately the X prefix does not indicate an express service as it still calls at every stop along the route, but takes a slightly more direct route into Bracknell.  Route 4 rambles around the southern estates, but there is only a few minutes difference (if any) in journey time as both take around an hour and a quarter.  The train is much faster if you want to go from town centre to town centre.

Carousel Buses 454 seen in High Wycombe Bus Station this morning.

Nigel Peach

Last Saturday (16th Nov) High Wycombe town centre was closed to traffic in readiness for the Christmas lights switch on that evening. There were lots of stalls, amusements for children and I have not seen so many people in the town for years.

Buses were therefore diverted from their usual routes. The pA surprise from Carousel is a Christmas timetableicture is of ADL Enviro200 MMC 80482 passing the police station and crossing the river to join the big roundabout at the bottom of Marlow Hill. This bus and 80479 are recent repaints into Carousel livery but have not yet received their branding. They do both however have larger fleet numbers and reverting to white numbers (rather than yellow). This is a welcome change I've noticed on recent repaints. My eyes find it hard to read fleet numbers in the smaller font!

We have received the Period 7 Fleet Card for Stagecoach West dated 08/11/2024. The Oxford EVs are slowly beginning to appear on the Fleet Card as they enter service. With their entry into service, the resulting cascades have started.

These are the changes for Period 7 that we have found, changes affecting Oxford (Thames Transit) depots being shown in yellow.

No vehicles from any other Stagecoach company were loaned for the Races this time. All operations were covered in house by Stagecoach West.

Adam Harber

On Friday 15th November 2024, fleet numbers 15989 (“Poppy Bus”), 15990 and 15991 went on loan to Cheltenham depot for use at the Cheltenham Races November meet, with “on hire to…” notices in the windows. After the Race meet, on the morning of 17th November, all three headed south to Swindon depot which will be their new home, along with 15992 which has been at Swindon since 30th October. 15989 did make a brief return to Oxford as it was used as a staff bus to get Oxford and Tube loan drivers back to their home depot on Friday night, returning to Cheltenham on Saturday afternoon. 15988 and 15993 are both expected to move to Swindon depot soon.

The November meeting at Cheltenham is only a fraction of the size of the Gold Cup meeting in March, so the PVR was about 25 compared with a typical PVR of 75-80 for the March event. As a result of the EV buses coming on-line in Oxford, this year West had capacity to run the entire event in-house with no loan buses from other Stagecoach companies being needed.

Photos from Cheltenham Races…

This was only at the Races on the Friday, and was driven to and from the event by Banbury driver Andrew Tingey.

10903 at Cheltenham Railway Station before start of services on Saturday. When new, this bus was originally destined for Oxford
before being diverted to Cheltenham for use on Service 93 Park and Ride, and remained at Cheltenham
when Service 93 was downgraded to E200MMC use.
In December 2024, the Park and Ride service (now with route number 100) will be upgraded to double-deck use again,
this time using 11747-749 that are due to be transferring from Witney.

11249 at Cheltenham Railway Station as a spare bus. It appears to have an issue with the rear destination display.

15990 at Cheltenham Racecourse on Saturday evening, being driven by Trevor Bayliss who is Witney and Banbury Operations Manager.
His Banksman is George Sloan, who was previously Oxford depot Operations Manager but has recently been appointed Operations Director for Stagecoach West.

15991 at Cheltenham Railway Station before start of services on Friday morning. Being driver by Chipping Norton driver Robert Knight.

Round the back of Cheltenham depot… Heritage Bus 19950 (JOU160P) parked up with withdrawn 18314 and 50274.

Heritage Bus 19950 (JOU160P) parked up with withdrawn 18314 and 50274. The Heritage Bus is still showing destination 902 from when both the bus and I were on loan to Portsmouth depot in September as part of the vintage shuttle bus service at Goodwood Revival.

Update from my report on Sunday… ADL are undertaking a recall type inspection and possible upgrade work on the EV buses. This will probably delay the rollout program and may also see some diesel buses on loan to the depot while this takes place. While frustrating, these delays are to be expected on a brand new vehicle design.

15989-15992 have moved to Swindon from Oxford with 15987/8/993 due to follow but these may well be delayed due to the continuing technical issues that have again needing to be resolved to the new EVs and the planned full EV rollout from the 24th November 2024 on all smart zone routes has been temporarily persponed again until a later date and until then the operations from Network Oxford will be operated with a mix of EVs and conventional diesel buses until the technical issues are resolved and that a full EV rollout can be done at the Earliest opportunity.

Here is a fleet update the transfer of coaches 50450 & 50451 from Scotland to Oxford is currently still on hold until the reallocation of the scottish city link fleet has taken place and Perth depot is still awaiting  3 outstanding Volvo 9700dd coaches which are presumed to be 50531/2/3 and these will then release the two for Oxford.

Adam Harber

In other news, Coach 50449 has returned to Oxford depot after spending a couple of weeks in the paint shop of at H.& J. Commercial, Yate. It has not been back out in service at the time of writing.

London update from Gavin Francis

A trip into London always provides a wide range of bus interest subjects to photograph.

New wraps continue to  appear.

A new Harry Potter shop has opened on Oxford Street and to promote it BCE 47013 is pictured at the Rte 94 western terminus at Acton Green.

Another new shop to open on Oxford Street is for TK Maxx and LTs 86 and 70 are pictured on the Rte 148 in Victoria, interestingly the route has now returned to its original route after many years and now passes through Victoria Bus Station. Also sporting the TK Maxx wrap is LT 958 at Marble Arch.

Also pictured at Marble Arch are LT 974 (Chocomel) LT 80 (Yas Island) and LT 961 (Jack Daniels)

Sightseeing buses are also used for wrap advertising and RATP VXE 725 promotes the M&M store in Leicester Square and Top View Sightseeing SN12EHJ Guess fashions. It looks far different from when it was Metroline TE 1986 and is seen in Greenford in May 2014.

Because of the frequency of The Oxford Tube service their coaches seem to be passing Marble Arch every few minutes. A start has been made on repainting the ex-Scottish Citylink Coaches with 50445 already done but 50454 is one still  to be done. Appropriate for the month of November Poppy wrap 50452 has just loaded on the Oxford bound stop and is ready to move off.
