Serious flooding hits Oxfordshire from Richard Sharman

The serious flooding in Oxfordshire on Monday the 24th saw many bus routes diverted in the county.

For a good few hours the A40 to and from Oxford was closed due to fast running, deep water covering the road.

The Oxford Tube was thus diverted and came into Oxford via the A34, coming off at Pear Tree roundabout-
the location for this picture of a Tube in a rare location,  captured from a flooded Pear Tree Services.

Daventry vintage day by Tony Bungay

As you know Malcolm its the part of September when all manner of places open their doors for the general public up and down the country.

A small running day was held in Daventry on the 8/9/24, recreating services to a number of places nearby.

The immaculate United Counties Bristol VRT SL2 778 is seen on outskirts of Daventry.

This vehicle is one of those Bristol VRT's SL1 and SL2 that were modified by the company in the mid 1980's to bring them up to near SL3 standard.

A view of the parking area in Daventry Town Centre.

Northampton Transport Daimler 267 at Braunston Village
.

Midland Red 5905 at Staverton
.

United Counties Bristol MW 201 at picturesque Ashby St Ledgers.

The vehicle developed a gear box problem while operating this route. Not an easy vehicle to drive I was told anyway, the driver had more than his enthusiast work cut out trying to engage the right gear at every hill and junction, let alone having to stop to allow passing cars on narrow village roads.

An interesting report and much appreciated. Ed.

Bromley bus garage open day and running day on September 14th
by
Andrew Webb.

Stagecoach marked the 100th anniversary of Bromley bus garage with a successful open day on 14 September which raised over £17000 for cancer charity Macmillan.  Complimenting the open day was the latest London Bus Museum running day featuring heritage buses on several routes including 61 and 261 which pass the garage.

Recent Stagecoach open days have seen a vehicle treated to a special livery and Bromley was no exception.

Enviro 400MMC 11066 has been outshopped in this attractive livery named 'Selkent Diplomat' and took pride of place in the garage display.

One of the first London examples of the Enviro 400EV was attracting much attention inside the garage.
The operator and identity of this were unclear.

The parking facility opposite the garage also had a display of vehicles including Titan T747 beautifully restored to the livery it carried for the Golden Jubilee of London Transport in 1983.  When London Buses were privatised in the 1990s Stagecoach purchased East London and Selkent, bringing large numbers of the model into the group's ownership.

The London Bus Museum running day bought a selection of vehicles from the 1930s to the 1980s onto the streets of Bromley with routes 61 and 261 passing the garage.  Glorious September sunshine allowed the vehicles gleam as they threaded their way through crowds of enthusiasts during the afternoon.

The oldest vehicle in use was RT1 from the museum, dating from 1939.

Always immaculately presented and attracting lots of passengers, it is seen here pausing at the garage.

15 years younger, and built in the same year that the Routemaster made its debut,
RT4779 was also in use, seen at Bromley South station.

The 'man on the Clapham omnibus' probably wouldn't recognise that visually similar RTL554 is mounted on a Leyland chassis.
It is seen approaching the garage.

A GS ran on route 471 between Orpington and Green Street Green, a service which doesn't pass Bromley garage.
The class was represented in the garage by GS15.

Green Street Green was also served by 'country' route 402 from Bromley North.
RF600 was in charge of an afternoon journey approaching the garage.

A more modern (albeit nearly 50 years old) was Leyland National LS30 which proved very popular on route 61

The Routemaster is always well represented at running days and 14 September was no exception.

RM1005 is unique in having a Euro 6 engine which makes it compliant with the ULEZ.
It advertises this prominently to Saturday afternoon shoppers near Bromley South station,
an area which saw some vociferous opposition to the zone.

RML2760 is the newest Routemaster 'only' dating from 1968.  Its last London operator was Stagecoach,
albeit north of the river, so looked very much at home crawling through the traffic outside the garage.

Designed as a replacement for the Routemaster, the London life of the DMS did not go to plan,
with the Routemaster outliving the class by many years.  Doyen of the class DMS1 represented the type.

A rather more successful type was the Leyland Titan, although even these were outlived by the Routemaster.
T23, in a livery used during the 1970s, is seen near the garage.
The class was delivered concurrently with the MCW Metrobus which was represented by M6.

An interesting report and much appreciated. Ed.

A Day out with Thomas Walker-Werth

Thomas Walker-Werth

I visited Aylesbury and Leighton Buzzard on Saturday, September 14th, chiefly to ride the new X4 route, which changed last week. I'll give a bit of a history of the route by way of context:

Before my time, United Counties ran a route X15 from Bedford (later Northampton) to Reading via Milton Keynes and Aylesbury. It was gradually back to run only between MK and Aylesbury and operation passed to Aylesbury Vale & District, which became part of Arriva. When I started riding it in the mid-2000s, it ran from Aylesbury via Bierton and Wing to Leighton Buzzard, then through Heath and Reach to Fenny Stratford, Bletchley, up the V7 into CMK, and then down to the station.

All that changed with the opening of the catchfly named A4146 Stoke Hammond and Linslade Western Bypass in 2007. With Bucks County Council funding, Arriva replaced the X15 with two routes: the 100, which took the X15 route as far as the new roundabout east of Wing then ran non-stop to CMK via the A4146 and A5, and the 150, which continued along the X15 route and terminated in Heath & Reach. The 100 initially didn't serve MK Central station but did a one-way loop around the city centre serving the next stop up Midsummer Boulevard, variously known as the Abbey National, Pinnacle, or Wetherspoons stop.

Although this created a much faster MK-Aylesbury link, it removed the link between Heath & Reach and Bletchley/CMK. So, after a few years, Arriva extended the 150 to CMK (although not via Bletchley), creating a half-hourly service over the whole route but with a roughly 20-minute journey time difference between the 100 and 150. This situation persisted until the 100's council funding ran out in 2012, at which point we were left with just the 150, which was subsequently routed via the V7 once again and now served the top edge of Bletchley along Bletcham Way.

Since then, the route has been adjusted here and there. By the time it became the X4 under Arriva's ill-fated rebrand of its Aylesbury long-distance network, it had changed to serve Leighton Buzzard rail station and to run via the OU and Caldecotte to replace former MK city routes 11/12.

This month's changes substantially return the north end of the route to the original X15 route, once again running via Bletchley bus station. South of Leighton Buzzard things are radically different, however. The X4 now runs out of town to the south instead of the west, using the A505/A4146 bypass to regain the A418 towards Wing. It also now bypasses Bierton and instead takes the new A418 route through Kingsbrook before jumping down onto Tring Road to share the X5's route into town from there.

A discussion of this route would be incomplete without mentioning Red Rose's revived route 100, which is a little slower than Arriva's old 100 as it diverts to serve Newton Leys and Fenny Stratford, but still offers a much better end-to-end journey time than either the X4 or the X6 (formerly X60, an alternative MK-Aylesbury route via Buckingham created by fusing the former routes 32 and 60 back in 2014).

Here are my photos of the new X4 route (the interior shot is on the new A418 through Kingsbrook):

Martin Isles  SHOWBUS latest

Thought you might like to use this pic in the pre-SHOWBUS issue.  There is also a better pic of the Eastbourne Aviation bodied Leyland G7 or RAF type in Stoneham Motors livery.  Expect there may be a few more classics join them in the next few weeks.

The Red Rose East Lancs Dart SLF featured in this week’s issue should be performing the hourly shuttle from Aylesbury and its twin on display at the showground.  Carousel are doing the Bicester North – Shopping Village – SHOWBUS service on a roughly hourly headway, but affording the driver a lunch break.  A Carousel Country Enviro200MMC will be on Display with one of the new Flightline Enviro400MMC – and an Oxford GB Kite Electroliner will be displayed with our other two (so far) electric entries: the Stagecoach Oxford Enviro400EV and Diamond Midlands Custom Denning Element.

SHOWBUS REMINDER

Just a reminder that SHOWBUS now only seven weeks away.  Entries are not only strong, but include some impressive buses and coaches.  They are already in excess of 100, which bodes well for numbers on the day and we hope you might be amongst them.  Apologies if this email is duplicated but I occasionally go boggle eyed cross checking the addresses!

Obviously arrangements are a little different to previous events with the heavy organisational involvement of the Bucks Railway Centre.  None other than Mike Sutcliffe, the Leyland Bus Man, and well known author is writing the programme this year and lead times are expected to be longer than usual, so please try and get your entry in before the end of the month to be sure to be included.  Of course we appreciate that not everyone can be sure that far in advance, you will be welcome to enter after that date and whilst your vehicle will be included on our web listing, it may not make it into print!

We will be operating various trips for visitors as usual.  There will be an hourly bus service to and from Aylesbury by Red Rose connecting to buses and London trains, similarly an hourly service to Bicester serving the Shopping Village and connecting with the Oxford BV1 electric shuttle to Bicester North.  Arriva will be operating an excursion from Milton Keynes and another is available from Luton.

We also plan a shuttle, using double-deckers to Waddesdon Village for the Manor and to Claydon House via Hogshaw Farm and Wildlife Park with single deckers.  Assuming your insurance is valid if you would like to volunteer for one or more trips please email me at rally@showbus.com

Bob Chalmers rides the X15

I took a ride from Abingdon to Witney (and back) on the new X15 service on the first two Saturdays of its operation (7th &14th). Basically it went pretty well both times - timekeeping was fairly good on all journeys but turnround time in Witney was quite tight. I sat front seats on the top deck for all journeys and the biggest concern was the amount of overhanging tree branches in various locations - Millets Farm, Standlake and Ducklington being the worst. On all occasions the drivers drove with care and slowed down when they could see they were likely to hit the hanging branches. It's quite unnerving at the front and it's strange how your natural reaction is to 'duck down' as you approach the branches!! I guess this will improve in time as theses locations would of only had single decker vehicles using the route previously. The loadings the second Saturday seemed much greater than the first. It was interesting to watch 'locals' in the villages looking in amazement at the sight of a 'huge' double decker going passed their gardens!! I notice timekeeping in the week is much more chaotic mainly down to Abingdon Road in Oxford  and also short notice road works in Abingdon adding to delays - on a couple of days some buses on X1/X15 were running up to an hour late. Another thing I noted was that the main bus stop 'signs' in Abingdon Town centre area have not been updated with the X15 signage (timetables have been). The only other thing of slight concern was at Southmoor where the X15 towards Witney has to cross over the A420 (dual carriageway) to head back to Kingston Bagpuize roundabout. That is a busy and fast stretch of road and I imagine the drivers need all their wits about them to complete this manoeuvre safely. Anyway good to see a new regular route come into operation and hope it gets the support it deserves - well done Oxford Bus.

Chris Huntingford commenting about Oxford Bus Electroliners

"One of the (many) nice features of Oxford electrification is the diesel StreetDecks are now appearing on more country routes, bringing a touch of class to the sticks. However, a small issue I find sitting near the engine on the fast A roads is that noise levels can be a bit high. The other evening, I used Harwell-painted bus 623 on the X40. It felt like the gearbox was different, preventing very high revs, and the engine itself was far quieter. Anyone out there know the difference? I ran into a friend on the bus, and we could both easily have a conversation at the back."

Thomas W W Knowles was at Buses Festival with a comment

I too was at Buses festival but as I still use film(!) quick presentation of photographs is impossible for your briefing.

Within the photographs shown was ex Canham's of Whittlesea LMG 184. It looked splendid and I was told that this was its first outing since refurbishment.

The reason I draw attention to this vehicle is because of its unusual history which may be of interest to your readers. The bus is a Leyland bodied Leyland LT8 that was new to Eastbourne  the month before the Second World War broke out as JK 8421. It was then requisitioned by the War department and according to the PSV Circle passed to Valliant of London in February 1945 gaining a new registration of LMG 184. Later in 1945 it went to Canham where it stayed until 1963 after which it was rescued by Colin Shears of the west of England Transport museum  Winkleigh, Devon. The PSV Circle records its current owner as Canham, Whittlesea so presumably it has gone back to one of the family that operated it for 18 years.

it is probably totally correct to say with the virtual exit of Arriva from the area, and subsequent takeover of their services by Carousel and Redline, the past couple of months have been flat out.

From 1st September Carousel doubled the frequency on route 36 to Bourne End. So Flackwell Heath is now served every 30 minutes instead of 60. This is very much welcomed by the villagers.

The timetable means that they are now scheduled to "cross" in the middle of the village.

A PRESTIGIOUS WIN OF A NATIONAL AWARD FOR READING BUSES

September 20 2024  Press release no. 1849

Reading buses have dedicated their win of a prestigious award at a national event to their employees and customers.

Held last night (September 19 2024) at De Vere Beaumont in Windsor, Reading buses won the Passenger Transport Award at the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Awards; after facing some tough competition.

The award encompasses the achievement of outstanding improvements in passenger service, implementing new technology, equipment or information management, demonstrating improvements in organisation or human resources and championing environmental sensitivity.

Reading Buses faced tough competitors in the category, with both Greater Anglia and Blackpool Transport being shortlisted for the award.

The Reading Buses nomination highlighted their work in revolutionising the way people pay for travel in Reading; from their early adoption of mobile and contactless ticketing to their latest step in ticketing introduced in November 2023; tap on, tap off which automatically works out the best fare for customers as they travel throughout the day.

The operator also highlighted their success in recruiting new drivers, bucking a national trend as well as the continued success of their partnerships with local authorities including the highly successful multi-operator ticket – the Reading All-Bus ticket and free travel weekends in Wokingham and West Berkshire during Christmas 2023.

Reading buses also showcased their on-going commitment and investment in improving their fleet including the introduction of 7 new buses for the London Line 702 and Flightline 703 routes which offer an elevated level of comfort and customer experience.

Chief Executive Officer Robert Williams, who received the award on the night, said:

This award is a fantastic endorsement of the work put in by our team to provide the best possible service for the residents of Reading and wider Thames Valley area”.

Fashion brands dominate the latest batch of overall wraps to take to the capital's streets.

Singer songwriter Charli XCX is the face of H&M's campaign for their new Autumn Winter 2024 range.

Metroline's LT799 shows the offside at Warren Street station on 7 September.

The nearside is illustrated on Arriva's LT973 as it awaits departure from Marble Arch on the same day.

'New York Stories' is the theme of a new collection from DKNY.

Go Ahead's LT854 at London Bridge and stablemate LT457 rounding Elephant & Castle illustrate both aspects of the advert on 7 September.

Arriva's LT956 promotes English fashion brand Reiss as it approaches Waterloo on 7 September.

Fashion brands continue to provide a good source of advertising revenue for the capital's bus operators, with four new campaigns currently running.

Cos is a regular advertiser on TfL routes, with the current campaign featuring male and female versions.

Arriva's LT210 at Angel and Go Ahead's LT864 on Old Kent Road on 21 September illustrate both variants.

Also on Old Kent Road is LT868 carrying an advert for Dolce & Gabbana.  The nearside is seen on Transport UK's LT617 at Parliament Square.

Old Kent Road on 21 September was something of a catwalk for the fashion buses, with Go Ahead's EH240 promoting White Fox.

Guess have turned to sightseeing operator Top View to promote their products on this Enviro 400 seen at Parliament Square on 21 September.

Whilst other sightseeing operators regularly carry all over adverts, this is the first time Top View's London operation has had one.
The bus started life with First London as DN33756.

Chilly's, a reusable water bottle company, are advertising their new 'Switch' cup on London United's BCE47015.

It is seen here in a quiet Oxford Street early on 21 September.

The Switch is described as the  "ultimate 2-in-1 Cup. Easily switch from straw mode to cup mode. Perfect for both hot and cold drinks."

In the same location is Metroline's LT762 advertising the inclusion of Apple TV+ on Barclays 'Blue Rewards' loyalty programme,
with the nearside seen on Transport UK's LT711 at Elephant and Castle later the same day.

Elephant and Castle is also the setting for stablemate LT622 which advertises Chocomel, a a Dutch brand of chocolate-flavoured milk.

This striking advert is for popular Channel 4 series "The Great British Bake Off".  Go Ahead's LT869 is seen on Old Kent Road on 21 September,
whilst the nearside is seen later the same day on Arriva's LT971 passing the site of the former Chelsea Barracks.
